    Window Defroster

in Welcome to the Tech Forum

Has anyone wired a window defroster through the PDM?

Im adding an aftermarket defroster kit to my front windshield. It comes with a relay and button with timer but if able, Id like to just use the PDM but not sure if it makes sense to. The kit I’m going to use is linked below. It’s 12V and runs on a 10 min timer. Im sure I can replicate the timer function but not sure how the resistance nature of the heating element would impact the PDM, if at all.

Couldnt tell for certain but looks like it could pull between 8-17A. Seems like a fairly decent range. I would reach out to manufacture, or test on bench possibly.

Hi Jason, As Ben has said the best thing to do is contact the manufacturer to try and get some details on the current draw. Alternatively you can just plug it in to the PDM and see how much current it draws. If it is too much for a single PDM output then it will just trip. In this case you could then use two outputs in parallel. You may find that the current draw varies quite a bit based on the temperature, so it would be worth keeping some reasonable margin on your fuse trip limits.

I got the defroster installed with the new windshield and it has some specs in the paperwork. Pretty sure everything should work as it should with the right wiring to the PDM.

    Fuse: 20 amp

    Voltage: 12V

    Modulation: 100% Timer: 10 Mins

    Current: Peak/RMS/Avg: 10.3-15.3A

current depends on how wide the elements are since the kit is adaptable. I would be right about in the middle of that range I think.
